120 years of Spanish excavations in Egypt

Spanish archaeology in Egypt began as early as 1886 when Spanish diplomat Eduardo Toda Y Gèell took charge of overseeing the excavation and inventory of the artefacts in the tomb of the 19th-Dynasty craftsman Sennedjem at Deir Al-Medina, near Luxor. During the early 20th century, the Count of Galarza carried out excavations in Giza and in 1908, when Cairo University was built, he was the only Spaniard to be appointed as a lecturer.

Discovery of a new necropolis in the Fayyum

A necropolis consisting of 53 rock-cut tombs dating to the Middle (ca. 2061-1786 BC) and New (ca. 1569-1081 BC) Kingdoms and the 22nd Dynasty (ca. 931-725 BC) has been discovered by an Egyptian archaeological mission sponsored by the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). The necropolis lies in the southeastern part of the pyramid field of Illahun in Egypt’s Fayyum region.

Professor Miroslav Verner was awarded the prize of the Minister of Education for science and research

Professor Miroslav Verner was awarded the prize of the Minister of Education for science and research. On November 26, 2007, the prize was awarded by the Minister of Education Martin Bursík, and in the field of institutional support of science and research, professor Miroslav Verner of the Czech Institute of Egyptology was one two people who were awarded the prize, in his case for the publications Abusir IX and Abusir X.

Gratias Agit prize

The research team of the Czech Institute of Egyptology received on the 23rd of June 2005 the Gratias Agit prize for the promotion of the Czech republic abroad. The prize is awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

Secrets of the tomb of Neferinpu

The story of the exploration of the mysterious tomb of priest Neferinpu, who lived in ancient Egypt in the 24th century BC has been unfolding already for two years and its end is still nowhere within our sight. The tomb was discovered in the spring of 2006, and in the same season, the chapel which housed the cult of this priest and other members of his family was also brought to light.

The shaft tomb of Menekhibnekau

The tomb of the official Menekhibnekau is the third structure of its kind explored in the group of large shaft tombs from mid 1st century BC in the southwestern part of the ancient Egyptian cemetery at Abusir. The tomb lies about 40 m to the southeast of the tomb complex of priest Iufaa, whose intact burial chamber was discovered in the year 1996.

In accordance with the research programme of the Czech Institute of Egyptology of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, the first stage of excavations at Abusir planned for the archaeological season 2005-2006 took place in September and October of this year. Its aim was above all the verification of several hypotheses relating to the development of ancient Egyptian architecture, society and religion in the 3rd millennium BC. The work concentrated on archaeological exploration of areas that had been selected in advance on the basis of surface survey, satellite imaging and geophysical measuring.
